Reply All is a song about a podcast about the internet that’s also a song about mental illness.
The steady, low rumble of Fielder’s voice balances against their groovy weather channel take on the “best hold music ever,” making it a syncopated beat with an upswing on the kick that gets your head bopping before they’ve even started rhyming. Don’t be fooled by the casual delivery in their tone—what might sound like nonsensical stream of consciousness is actually 48 bars of expertly crafted lyrics calling back to at least 21 different episodes of the titular podcast, which also sourced the audio samples used in the making of this beat.
Fielder’s lyrical style mixes dense, complex rhymes reminiscient of DOOM with delicious wordplay and easter eggs to delight the listener, their seamless use of samples offering audio surprises the likes of which Longmont Potion Castle and Breakmaster Cylinder could appreciate.
Fielder made it their personal mission to cram the song with as many Reply All references as possible without relying on non sequiturs or repetition to master the rhyme scheme, but even with the homage to Gimlet Media’s flagship show, the attentive listener might catch the personal story within:
“And I think my Spotify is Googling my Hulu/ And my rodent infestation might be the work of Zardulu [#56]” as well as the follow-up bars, “I’m like, “Cool”, let me check on that and get back to you/ I can’t stay up for two days straight, but I know just the dudes [#82]” both allude to Fielder’s history of mental illness, a story they’re only just starting to tell, but it’s one that’s well worth listening to.
